Many of the illegal immigrants who have been rebuilding New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina stayed behind when Gustav struck because they were afraid of being arrested.

If ICE knows they are illegal in this country why don't they do something to fix the problem? . If There is anything to rebuilt after the storm don't you think that hundreds of american citizens will be willing to do their jobs.the money will be better spent here with their families who already have financial problems than to be given to ilegal aliens and sent to countries. I only hear of Hondurans and El Salvadorians beeing deported. How about Mexicans?

Here we go again. Seems like this is another hard luck illegal immigrant editorial coming out of Tijuana, MEX.

I challenge the editor of this piece to write articles concerning the corrupt Mexican government, the drug lords, and those who take advantage of ANYONE wanting to jump the fence to come to the USA instead of articles like this one.

Seems to me the editor has enough feedback from the readers and bloggers of this type material to understand that illegal immigrants, whether it be from Mexico or any other country, are not welcome into the United States. If people want so desperately to enter the USA, then get the proper paperwork and work here LEGALLY.

    PERIOD !!!

Alice you are truly heartless. Stop for one second and imagine the plight of these people. They would rather risk their lives and suffer through a hurricane then be deported to a country where they physically won't be able to feed their children. And you want to literally kick them out the door because you believe some Americans might possibly want a job rebuilding demolished properties. If you have ever seen the fields in Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico, like I have, you would know that the farmers there would gladly hire US citizens if any of them showed up for work that day. What you don't get is that Americans really don't want these jobs. The next time you buy some fruit at a decent price, remember that.

i LIVE IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA AND THE VEGGIES AND THE FRUIT ARE PICKED BY ILLEGALS. THEY SPEND ALL DAY BENT OVER, IN THE HOT SUN, AND MANY OF THEM HAVE CHILDREN NOT MUCH OLDER THAN 4 OR 5 YEARS OLD WALKING ALONG AND PICKING UP THE FRUIT THAT FALLS OUT OF THE BAG OR OFF THE TRUCKS. AND MANY TIME THEY ARE INJURED AND THEY DON'T GO TO THE DOCTOR BECAUSE THEY ARE AFRAID OF BEING SENT BACK TO MEXICO OR HONDURAS.

NOW THERE ARE NO AMERICA N'S WHO WOULD DO THAT WORK FOR 5 DOLLARS A DAY AND THAT IS ALL THEY GET THAT IS WHY THEY LIVE IN CANYONS, ANY PLACE THAT'S NOT TO FAR FROM THE FIELD, SO IF AMERICA N'S WANT THOSE JOBS THAN THEY WILL HAVE TO GET THE OWNERS TO PAY MORE, AND SUPPLY HEALTH CARE AND VACATION TIME AND THAN WE WILL ALL BE HAPPY , EVERY THING WILL COST MORE BUT WE WILL ALL BE HAPPY.

I am fed up with these poor scared illegal immigrant stories. Why doesn't the author point out that these people are here illegally stealing jobs from Americans who desperately need them. It is high time we deported the lot of them! Since when is breaking the law so noble. Not only are they stealing jobs from Americans (and these are skilled construction jobs) but they take the money they earn and send most of it out of the country to their relatives so the money does not go into the US economy where it is sorely needed. Not to mention the fact that they do not pay a single dollar in income taxes and I guarantee that their employer does not pay any either. So, when they go to the emergency room for medical care, the money to pay for it comes out of the tax dollars paid by Americans. They also go to the emergency room for non-emergency treatment because no doctor is going to see them without getting paid, whereas an emergency room can not turn them away. This means long waits for people who truly do need emergency care and the closing of one ER after another because they can no longer afford to foot the bill that is the difference between what the gov't pays and the true cost of the care.

I also think that the companies that employee these day laborers should be seized by the gov't and sold off with the proceeds going into the US Treasury. If our gov't was serious about putting a stop to this it would not be that difficult. Simply have people watch these day laborer congregation sites and get the names on the trucks (or license plates to trace) of the companies that are hiring these people. Then simply show up at the company work sites and arrest all of the illegals and the managers that are permitting them to work and paying them under the table. Then go to the corporate headquarters and serve a seizure notice, taking control of all of the companies assets. The company can then be placed in receivership until such time as the company can be sold or it's assets liquidated.

All of this may sound extreme, but it is only extreme measures like these that will get the point across. The US will no longer tolerate the blatant hiring of illegals.

As far as the comments about the field workers in SoCal - Is the author espousing the practice of paying slave wages to keep food prices down?? I would gladly pay more for my produce to eliminate this practice and make sure that field workers are paid a decent wage that at least meets the state minimum wage or, even better, reflected a fair wage for the type of work that is being done.

Why does our news media continue to try and make us feel bad for the law breakers. If the news media wants to do something to help the US economy recover, they could start reporting these businesses that are operating illegally. There is no doubt that the states and the federal gov't could use the tax revenue generated by these businesses hiring legal, tax paying workers and from the businesses paying their share of the social security taxes. Also think of what this would do for the local economies of these areas. Most of the effected areas are poor agricultural areas. Since each dollar in wages paid into the local economy is said to change hands 6 times, this would be a real shot in the arm for all of the grocery stores, restaurants, retail stores, etc. in the effected region.

I FOR ONE WILL NOT FEEL BAD FOR THESE PEOPLE. THEY SHOULD BE DEPORTED AND SENT HOME SO THAT LEGAL U.S. RESIDENTS CAN HAVE THE JOBS THEY SO SORELY NEED!!!

I agree with you ICE should be arresting them and sending back to where every they came from, It seem like our government want them to stay and we have to difference laws our laws that we must obey and than our laws they do not needs to obey.

McCain and Obama both want to give them amnesty which is bring more and more in now, we have laws in place that would take care of this but no law enforcement department is doing anything about it.

I guess the illegal are our replacement we are no longer needed because we want to much money to work.

Austinite 1 I live in Arizona and believe me they have put a lot of us out of work, many of my friend was in the home building, electrical, air conditioning, plumbing field and was let go because the illegal came in and took the jobs for cheap labor. Ask the building inspector how many problem they have with the illegal building home. Us American are willing to work but was let go for your poor illegal labor so they can support their family, well what about our family sense this is our country.

Alice isn't truly heartless, you are because you do not care about the American citizens

Tabhi, you are right no American will do the job for $5.00 per day, only someone who is stupid and do not know how much profit the companies are making. If children 4 or 5 is working in the field the companies should be close and the owner put in jail for breaking child labor laws.

Yes the cost might go up and that because the companies want such high profits, but if we are paid fair wages the cost would not be a factor. Do not tell me they do not use our hospital because that is a lie, where has you head been. Wake up they are breaking laws, stealing people Social security numbers, driving without insurance and so forth. I do not want to hire someone who do not use their real name, because you will never be able to trust them period.

But if you really like the people feel free to go live with them or move to Mexico and help fix their country for we do not need you here. I want true American who care about this country and all of our children who die to keep this country safe.

Hey Tabhi---Stop shouting. There are lots of people looking for work baby. They'll do the jobs, and the owners will just have to pay a little more for enticement for legal workers. Also, if the migrant workers would come, pick, get paid a decent wage for their work, then go the hell home instead of overstaying their welcome, I wouldn't be having a problem with either one of you. But I have no sympathy for them, for illegals of any sort. They should all be deported.
Heck, there was a big amnesty program what, 10 years ago? There are still illegals here from before then. If it wasn't worth the effort then why would it be now?
          They should all be deported.

I agree with JS in SD....who cares? There are ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS! HELLO!! CRIMINALS! Crap, kick them out and seize the companies profits that are supporting this drag on our society!

They are NOT from this country, they are NOT the US government's problem! If the US would stop allowing illegals in then these people would be more inclined to rise up against their corrupt government and make some progress in their OWN country. Then we would be able to some some progress in OUR country.

I was born here and my grandparents are immigrants who waited in line and paid their due to be here legally... ALL immigrants should do the same!

Stop for one second and imagine the plight of these people. They would rather risk their lives and suffer through a hurricane then be deported to a country where they physically won't be able to feed their children.

Does this mean you think that we should have open borders? Over 40 million Mexicans alone have said they would be willing to come to the US if it was legal. There are already 12 - 20 million illegal immigrants here already which the American taxpayers have to support. At what point does it become Mexico's responsibility to provide for its people? Why should Americans be FORCED to support illegal immigrants? If guestworkers are needed to pick the fields, fine, allow TEMPORARY LEGAL guestworkers, not illegals. It's not just beneficial to us, it's also helpful to the guestworkers, who are often taken advantage of because of their illegal status.

And you want to literally kick them out the door because you believe some Americans might possibly want a job rebuilding demolished properties.

For the right wage, I would gladly rebuild demolished properties.

If you have ever seen the fields in Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico, like I have, you would know that the farmers there would gladly hire US citizens if any of them showed up for work that day. What you don't get is that Americans really don't want these jobs.

Why does seeing Mexicans in the field mean that farmers would gladly hire US citizens if any of them showed up for work? What you don't get is that Americans can't afford to work at the wages offered by the farmers because Americans don't believe they should have to live in a small room with 19 other American farmhands. As a teenager, I worked on a farm during my summers and found it to be fun and immensely rewarding. As an adult, I couldn't possibly support a family on such wages.

Shame on the employers that hired these invaders. Too bad they don't have E-Verify in LA like they now have in AZ. Go figure, these employers use cheap labor, so if the construction doesn't hold up in the future, I hope the homeowners will hold the contractors responsible.

Sad part of this story is that it was only written with a slant towards pro-illegal immigration, to get us that are against illegal immigration to feel sorry for these poor, unprotected from the storm, invaders. I don't feel one bit sorry for any of them, they know the risks they are taking every second of every day, from the moment they set their illegal feet on US soil. They wouldn't have to be dodging "The Man" if they would come here the proper way. Go HOME you illegal, unwanted invaders. But of course they aren't going to be reading these blogs, too busy hiding under the radar.

How about some of our OWN citizens, get off the Welfare, and get a job! Some of these jobs is as simple as going in and painting some walls! It's not like it's Rocket Science!

"Moving around has become very difficult for undocumented workers," said Pablo Alvarado, director of the National Day Labor Organizing Network.

The city did take some steps to make it easier: evacuation news releases were distributed in Spanish, and the city's 311 number had Spanish-speaking operators.

"Every action that we took in English, we tried to do in Spanish as well," city spokesman James Ross said.

But the message did not get through to wary Hispanic communities that have experienced increased immigration raids in recent years, said Jacinta Gonzalez, a day labor organizer with the New Orleans Workers Center for Racial Justice.

Adding to the difficulties, Gonzalez said, were problems with the 311 service. Several day laborers complained of being on hold for more than 30 minutes before getting connected with a Spanish-speaking operator.

Pablo Alvarado, Lets call them what they are. Illegals. And Jacinta Gonzalez, Sorry about the wait, we'll get some more Spanish speaking operator right away so you don't have to learn English. Sweet baby Jesus would that be a crime.

When the heck will illegal aliens ( and liberals ) realize that this has NOTHING to do with race? It is about ILLEGAL immigration and nothing else. There is nothing ambiguous about the word illegal
and the bleeding heart liberals need to bleed a little for their fellow Americans instead of criminals
that break into our country and use up resources that they have no right to.
I am furious that every time someone talks about immigration they carefully leave out the most important word, ILLEGAL. These people are not immigrants, they are illegal immigrants and as such are criminals that are breaking Federal Laws, so it's ok to make a Federal case out of it.
Those that employ such people should be fined and arrested. This has to happen and happen now.

This is not about race. Ir is about illegal immigration! If you are an illegal immigrant, you are a criminal and nobody gives a rip what race you are. Why does this organization even exist?
Liberals will talk about illegal immigrants but never use the word illegal because that would be telling the truth. I'm sick of this. Throw these ILLEGALS out of the country or at least enforce our laws that make it a crime to hire them and a crime to rent to them and they will leave on their own.
If it's not good for Americans,, it's not good for America!!!!

It's not the color of their skin as you are so very, very misguided to believe. As a matter of fact, alot of the very POOR people in New Orleans are white too. These people need to stop being a BURDEN to the American tax payer, and get a job!

Hmmmm, Saul doesn't appear to want to let us know if he pays taxes. Interesting.

Let's see if you're mid-20's, you're employed, you pay taxes. That's the American way. The American tax payer pays for all ILLEGAL immigrants health care; that means health care TAKEN AWAY from LEGAL people in this country, and you wonder why we have a health care crisis. They also cross over the border when they're heaving in labor to drop their little bombs on American soil - they're called Anchor Babies, and are automatically American citizens even when their parents are here ILLEGALLY delivering while we tax payers pick up the tab. They're taking away unskilled labor jobs from Welfare recipients who canNOT find work because all the illegals scoop up these jobs for below poverty level wages (shame on American companies for that, and I hope they're fined on that one.), and WHO PAYS FOR WELFARE, that's right, Saul, that would be the American tax payer.

They have GANGS that make the Bruddahood look like a bunch of sissys!!!

They STEAL American people's identity, and use it as their own!

What more do you need to know, Saul???

with THOUSANDS of Americans out of work, why are illegal immigrants allowed to take their jobs in the first place? i'm sure the rebuilding can just as well be performed by American citizens. INS should be doing their job everywhere...this situation is rampant in any city within a certain distance from the borders. i say send them home or find someone to replace those who are supposed to be doing that with those who will. i'm sorry if they've been here 27 years and have a family...NOT my problem...they are NOT American citizens and should NOT be allowed to usurp the advantages of the real citizens.

                          Your right Saul...

We DON'T want to work for that salary. We have children and families that we need to provide for in ONE household. Several illegals will share an apartment, house or even live outside after which they will EXPORT our domestic dollars to build a new life back home.

Is this how we should now act? Should all of the Americans and Legal immigrants reduce themselves to this level of lifestyle?

Is this another one of Saul's empty resolutions?

If you choose to come to America, come legaly, learn American customs, learn english and then enjoy our awsome freedoms. freedoms which are eroding away because of these law breakers who come int my country (white, black. middle eastern and of course the down fall of this great nation, the wimpering hispanic. Get out you ilgals

Seeing as how US citizens will be taxed heavily how can we work for "that kind of salary"? Construction jobs around here used to be good paying job. Not any more since companies will hire illegals to do the job at 1/2 the cost of what they would have to pay a citizen. I suppose no American citizens want to work construction right Saul?
We can't afford to at the wages contractors pay illegals since we have that wonderful social security number which entitles us to give up 30 to 40% of your pay checks. Does it cost less now to build a house? No, it just means the contractor makes more profit by hiring illegals.

The problem is two fold. People who hire illegals plus the illegals themselves. First we need to prosecute the people doing the hiring. Jail and fine them heavily. Then deport every illegal caught working for them.

We can track where a bad batch of veggies that has the e coli bacteria in it but can't track illegals in this country? BS. It is just no one wants to.

I have no sympathy for them. I am tired of feeling like I live in a foreign country when I go to a store, seeing them receive benefits that US citizens do not due to the high taxes state taxes I am forced to pay. Round em up and ship em home.

Too bad the storm didn't blow them all home to their legal countries. Just by being here they show disrespect to our government and its people. They are a drain upon social programs and add nothing to the general population regardless of what the bleeding hearts say. All that the government has to do is to stop fearing the loss of Hispanic votes and enforce current laws, also bring back the Quick Response Teams. Bravo to California who has begun a conversation about deportment and the Republican party for looking for a statement of legality in the census.

That Anchor baby law is one that needs to be changed!! It was never intended to be a loophole used by people to take over our country. Make no mistake, that is exactly what is happening.

I think everyone born under the anchor baby provision, and all illegals who got their citizenship because of one, should have it REVOKED, and then be deported. This problem needs to be solved RETROactively. Forget about amnesty, lets see if we can't UNDO some of the damage.

Oh those poor illegal immigrants! What a ridiculous and irrelevant story. If people followed and obeyed the laws of this country they would not have to worry about anything. Yep, are we supposed to feel sorry as the result of this typically liberal biased story.....

Where's the verification of the purported fact they were actually rebuilding New Orleans! Or where they just using emergency rooms for free, stealing US Citizens identities, etc. See how the liberal media can twist things or distract from the truth....

And we are all supposed to feel sooo sorry for these law breakers, aren't we? Well, there are lots and lots of felons and criminals who spend their time in the shadows right along with the illegal immigrants. Birds of a feather flock together.
It goes with the territory: Break our laws and be ostracized from society. And if you get caught, off to jail or back where you came from. Tough luck. I prefer to spend some of my time being concerned about American citizens who get caught up in all the damage and death surrounding these storms...

i wish the liberal press would quit trying to make everyone feel sorry for these criminals - they need to be afraid as they are here ILLEGALLY - but the liberal press does not know anything about ILLEGAL -they just want us to feel sorry - well I for one don't - they need to be deported NOW - ICE should be searching houses since this was published but they are still for an open border and only arrest a few to show that they are still operating - but only at a minimum - they arrest about 1/100th of a percent of the ones that Border Control (or should I say uncontrol) lets through - notice I said LETS - neither are trying to enforce current law - G.W still wants an open border so he can hire CHEAP SLAVE LABOR - WASHINGTON IS IN LOVE WITH CHEAP SLAVE LABOR - EITHER FROM INDIA, CHINA, MEXICO OR CENTRAL/SOUTH AMERICA - SO THE MONEY FLOWS FROM THE GREEDY CORPORATIONS THE REFUSE TO HIRE GOOD AMERICANS - MCCAIN IS ALSO AN OPEN BORDER PERSON - OBAMA IS GETTING THERE - IF YOU GO TO WASHINGTON YOU GET BOUGHT OUT BY THE CORPORATIONS WANTING ONLY CHEAP SLAVE LABOR......

Go home is right. Are we supposed to feel bad for the suffering of people who aren't supposed to be here in the first place? If the government did their job in the first place, these people would be out of the country and out of the situation. People always say, oh who will work the farms? If the brokers weren't taking a cut, I know many peole that would love to work for the 13$ an hour the initial pay is, only $8 is now going to the workers paid through brokers, cutting out jobs and feeding this illegal activity. WHen will this country wake up and stop feeding the problems we have. Stop giving money to foreign countries for oil when we have natural gas right here, and stop taking care of everyone but our own. This is a sad time for us Americans.

Take all the Illegal Immigrants and Deport them now! They don't belong here and they certainly have "NO" rights. If they want to come back to this country the "LEGAL" way then fine. But until then get out. We are looking at 12 Million plus in this country. Especially the Mexicans. Enough is enough. I'm tired of paying for them. How can they possible stand up in front of a camera and say that they deserve "Special Treatment"? And when we see them standing up in front of our Committees, why in the heck aren't they arrested? Let the High Roller Politicians take care of them. With there Money. The Clintons, etc. I certainlty don't owe them nothing and neither does this great COUNTRY! THANK YOU

From a human standpoint, I feel badly that some people put themselves and their friends/family in harm's way because they feared deportation. So they'd rather play roulette with their lives than be sent back from whence they came? That's a choice, made freely, which we champion. But so was the choice to break our law by entering our country without our leave, to lower overall wages by offering to work without benefits or prevailing wage, to work for law-breaking employers whose political contributions probably shield them from prosecution, to avail yourselves of our social services without contributing to the cost of providing them. A pox upon you for your criminal behavior, your disregard for the America we love, your fear of fighting your own country's politicians and drug lords who enslave your countrymen in poverty and despair.

Lately MSNBC has trotted out one illegal alien sob story after another in hopes to garner sympathy for the illegal aliens, but the reverse has happened. These left leaning, biased, yellow journalism hit pieces only serve to galvanize the MAJORITY of Americans who've had enough of this crime wave.

Illegal Aliens are a drain on the social services of the communities they invade. They take jobs Americans want, as evidenced by the raid at a plant a few weeks ago in which UNION members, who sat and watched illegal aliens steal their jobs and get all the overtime, applauded.

Keep the pressure up America, it's obviously working.
